(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 21)—The McKendree College hockey team dropped an 8-5 decision Friday night against the University of Kansas in a match played in Overland Park, Kan.
Sophomore center/wing Kyle Ilges (Highland, Ill./Highland) (Highland, Ill.) provided the offensive spark for McKendree with four goals, but the Bearcats could not overcome the Jayhawks. McKendree is now 5-8 overall and will meet Kansas against Saturday at 8 p.m.
Ilges’ first goal midway through the first period tied the game at 1-1 before the Jayhawks battled its way to a 3-1 advantage late in the period. However, freshman center/wing Nick Dreyer (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) (Waterloo, Ill.) scored with just 20 seconds left in the period to bring the Bearcats within 3-2.
Seven minutes into the second period, Ilges scored his second goal to even the score at 3-3. Kansas built another two-goal lead at 5-3 before Ilges completed his hat trick with 5:37 left in the period. The Jayhawks took a 6-4 lead into the third period when Ilges finished his scoring outburst in the first two minutes of the third period. But Kansas iced the match with two late goals to hold off the Bearcats.
Sophomore center Scott Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior defenseman Brent Grimm (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O’Fallon, Ill.) and junior wing Brian Neighbors (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Belleville, Ill.) each added two assists for McKendree. Junior goaltender Marcus Power (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O’Fallon, Ill.) made 43 saves in taking the loss for the Bearcats. Power also recorded his first assist of the season on Ilges’ final goal of the night.
